Sunset at Angkor Wat is an unforgettable experience, especially in April, when the sky often turns rich with colors and the evening light paints the temple in golden tones. Over my visits, I’ve discovered five favorite sunset spots where you can truly enjoy the beauty and peace of this ancient wonder. Here’s my personal guide to catching the best sunset views at Angkor Wat.
These are my personal top 5 sunset locations at Angkor Wat in April. Each offers a different experience — some are great for reflections, others for peace and quiet, and all give you a chance to witness one of the most beautiful sunsets in Cambodia. I hope this helps you enjoy your visit just like I did!
- The Moat – Left Side (My Favorite)
One of the best and most peaceful places to enjoy the sunset is from the left side of the moat. After entering the main gate, instead of walking straight in, turn left and walk along the edge of the moat. This area is quieter, with fewer tourists. Sit facing east and enjoy the golden light reflecting over the water and through the trees.
Perfect for: Those who want to chill, relax, enjoy a snack or cool drink during sunset without walking too far.

- After Crossing the Sandstone Causeway – Left Turn
As you cross the main sandstone bridge causeway, turn left before reaching the main gate. From here, you can face west directly toward the setting sun. It’s a peaceful option and gives a wide-open view of the sky turning orange and pink over the forest and water.
Perfect for: Visitors who want a quiet spot to sit, relax, and enjoy the view with light refreshments.
Note: You can choose either Spot 1 or 2 depending on your preference. Both offer peaceful settings, but due to time, it’s best to choose one.

- Middle Causeway View (Main Entrance)
If you continue straight across the main entrance (west gate) along the central causeway, you’ll see a direct view of Angkor Wat’s iconic towers. Around sunset, the sun lights up the temple from behind, casting a golden glow on the towers. It’s a classic and very photogenic spot.
Perfect for: Those who enjoy walking during sunset, capturing the golden light on the temple towers.

- The Right-Side Library and Pool
After entering the temple grounds, head to the right-side library and pool. The left pool is under renovation, so the right side is the better option. From here, you can see the reflection of Angkor Wat in the water, and when you turn to face the west, you’ll witness the colorful sunset skies. This is a popular and beautiful spot for photographers.
Perfect for: Those who want to explore the temple grounds and enjoy the iconic reflection during sunset.

- Behind Angkor Wat – Hidden Gem
One of the best and less crowded spots for sunset is at the back of Angkor Wat. In April, the sun sets clearly and colorfully. You can watch from the left corner, right corner, or directly in the middle behind the temple. This location is perfect if you love seeing a colorful sky and want a quiet place to reflect and enjoy the end of the day.
Perfect for: Adventurers who enjoy walking and exploring less crowded areas for vivid sunset skies.
Note: If you’re short on time, choose Spot 4 or 5 as they offer the best views and most rewarding sunset experience.

Map Guide Available
I’ve created a drawing map guide with images that shows all these sunset spots clearly. It’s easy to follow and helps you find each location quickly — just like I do. Ask for it or bring it along for your visit!

Need a Ride?
If you have your own driver or tuk-tuk, ask them to wait at the back parking area of Angkor Wat. It’s convenient if you plan to explore all five spots and finish your sunset viewing behind the temple.
