Date: April 16, 2025
Location: Srah Srang, Angkor Archaeological Park, Siem Reap
Event: Khmer New Year & Angkor Sankranta 2025 (#AS25)

Khmer New Year is usually known for its hot, dry days – especially from April 14 to 16. But this year, nature had a surprise for us. On April 16, 2025, while people were still enjoying the final day of the Angkor Sankranta festival, a gentle but unexpected rain fell over Srah Srang. The sky turned grey, cool winds came through, and even a flash of lightning struck the eastern horizon – something very unusual for this time of year.

I’ve lived through many Khmer New Years, and I don’t remember ever seeing rain on these days before. It made the celebration feel different – calmer, fresher, and maybe a sign of how weather patterns are beginning to shift in Cambodia. This rare moment, captured on camera, feels important to keep as part of our memory and documentation.

About Srah Srang – The Royal Bathing Pool
Srah Srang is a beautiful baray (reservoir) located just east of Banteay Kdei temple in the Angkor complex. It was originally dug in the mid-10th century during the reign of King Rajendravarman II, but what we see today is mostly from the 12th century, renovated by King Jayavarman VII.
Built: Mid-10th century, renovated in the late 12th century
Purpose: Used as a royal bathing pool, likely dedicated to Buddhist rituals
Size: Around 700 meters by 300 meters
Special Feature: A beautiful sandstone landing terrace with naga (serpent) balustrades
Even today, Srah Srang remains one of the peaceful places to enjoy sunrise or quiet moments during a visit to Angkor.
